Dear Parents,

Thank you for your support of our efforts to keep our campuses healthy and safe.

One of the challenges during a pandemic is knowing how to respond to the normal illnesses among children in our community. After more than two weeks of school, it is clear that we need more specific guidance on what to do if a family member falls ill.

The table below outlines what you as parents should do in various situations. The difference between your response to a sick family member who is over 18 and one who is under 18 comes from guidance from the Singapore authorities.

Please note that we have similar guidelines for teachers and staff. For example, a teacher presenting to a doctor with flu-like symptoms will be swabbed as a matter of routine and no one from their household will be permitted on campus until there is a negative result.

Situation

Age of sick family member

Action

Family/household member has/has had COVID-19

Applies to all ages

All students and family members stay away from school until the family member is fully recovered and cleared by a doctor.

Family/household member has had a swab test for COVID-19

Applies to all ages

All students and family members stay away from school until the results are back and negative.

Child member of household is ill with flu-like symptoms

Under 18

Siblings in the family can attend school. Sick child should not come to school until they have completed their medical leave and been 48 hours symptom-free.

Adult member of household is ill with flu-like symptoms

18 or over (an adult)

All children in the household stay away from school until the sick family member has completed their medical leave and all family members are 48 hours symptom-free.

As in all cases, we urge you to be cautious, visit a doctor and keep your children at home if you are concerned. Please continue to update their health and travel information and to take their temperatures each morning before they come to school. Your efforts are helping to keep our community safe.

Finally, the health advisory site continues to be updated, including with recent communications, so please do refer to it if you have questions.

Yours sincerely,

Elizabeth Bray, Head of UWCSEA Dover
Graham Silverthorne, Head of UWCSEA East
